Grizzly Man Essay

Grizzly Man In Grizzly Manï ¼Å'among the controversy stirred by the behavior of Treadwell, the central idea expressed in the film is that the nature is indeed indifferent and man should not cross the borderline between man and nature. Wild animals are not friends of human. Treadwell put all his heart to the cause of protecting the bears. He repeated in his films for many times that he loved them and he was willing to die for them. He tended to anthropomorphize them like many people do to the dogs and cats, but he forgot they were not those tame pets. He touched bears in a way that seemed to irritate them. He maybe had a belief and confidence that the bears also saw him as their friend and treated him differently. But in fact they didn’t. In the narrator’s opinion, â€Å"the common denominator of the universe is not harmony, hostility and murder.† Treadwell spent 13 years with the bears and he thought it was a wonderful and simpler world, he even wanted to become a bear, but in reality it is a hash world. In those big and ferocious bears’ eyes, they see only food and they never regard him as a friend. The narrator tells this observation at the end:†from all the faces, all the bears that Treadwell ever filmed, I discovered no kinship, no understanding, no mercy. I see only the overwhelming indifference of nature.† There is an ultimate invisible line between bear and human. The line has been respected by native people and the majority of the public. They know it is a very different world from the one where human lives. â€Å"when you cross the line, you pay the price.† the curator of the Kodiaks Alutiiq Museum mentioned this principle that has been strictly observed for 7000 years. He doesn’t agree with Treadwell’s behavior of staying too intimately with bears. He believes that â€Å"he has crossed the invisible boundary†, that is, the line which has been mentioned above. So even if Treadwell was repeatedly declaring that his main purpose was to protect bears from poachers, he didn’t realize that his behavior was another kind of invasion of their habitat and he was doing a lot of damage to them. He got close to those bears crazily and in un undue way. He violated the reasonable rule of the park that one should maintain at least 100 yards of distance from the bears. He lived with them and tried to make the bears get used to the existence of human, which was very dangerous for bears, and so on. As the narrator says in the movie, the best protection for the animals is that of their habitat. Any action of protecting animals by invading their habitat is not persuasive and of course can’t do any good to them. Like Treadwell, during his 13 years, he didn’t give bears any practical protection except serving them a delicious dinner with his and his girlfriend’s bodies. Life of Pi The view presented in this movie is that human and ferocious animals can co-exist peacefully if human can meet the survival needs of the animals and nature can give human hope and direction to survive. Darwin’s theory—the survival of the fittest, emphasizes the fierce and somewhat ruthless struggle of survival among the species and the individuals. It is indeed true in most cases. But in Life of Pi, it describes a picture of human and animal’s co-existence in a more harmonious way and proves that their struggle and contradiction are not so irreconcilable. In this movie, Pi was taught at his childhood by his father, that the animals, esp, the tiger, etc are not his friends. So at the first of the drift, Pi didn’t intend to co-exist with the tiger. He had had the chance to kill it. But his virtuous nature didn’t allow himself to do so. So he made the final decision to co-exist with this ferocious animal. He supplied the tiger with food and fresh water to survive so that he himself would not become the dinner of it. The threat to each other and the certain kind of peaceful co-existence helped them persevere to be saved at last. Even Pi himself admitt ed that â€Å"the fear of Richard Parker kept me alert. I wouldn’t survive without Richard Parker.† Human actually should be grateful to nature. Nature provides them with the animals living in it and therefore sustains human’s life. In the movie, nature is indifferent by the storm which caused the disaster of the ship’s sink and took away so many people’s lives. But on the other side, during the hopeless drift on the sea, nature also gave them food in the sea. It led him to the island when Pi had already lost his hope for survival, which made him regain the hope for life. Nature gave these seemingly coincidences to make for Pi’s survival from this disaster. Which kind of view do you agree with? Comparing two different views presented in these two movies, the former is more persuasive and reasonable. Handling the relations between human and nature, people should always remember that nature is indeed indifferent and keep a proper distance away from nature, especially the animals. Any human action which interferes with their natural life in an undue way will surely provoke the revenge of nature and pay a price for what they do. Guess of teacher’s view Teacher may agree that nature is indifferent but to some extent human and can get along well with each other unless both of them don’t cross the borderline and do harm to the other. Because America is a country which pays much attention to environment protection. They don’t encourage too much intimacy with nature for they know the ruthless and indifferent nature, so they do a good job in establishing the wildlife reserves. But on the other hand, they love to be close to nature.

Philosophy Plato Essay

For Plato, just like for Socrates, Philosophy was ; A way of life not just a specialised and technical activity in about 387 BC, he attended The Academy   lasted for a 1000 yrs. Socrates was only interested in   ethics. While Plato was interested in   ethics, metaphysics, politics, aesthetics, Mathematics Plato’s Allegory (story in which there is a fact & a true story) of the Cave Plato asks ; â€Å"What would happen if one of these prisoners were released from his chains, were forced to stand up, turn around (conversion) and walk with his eyes lifted up towards the light? † Eventually, he would be able to see the real object for and in itself ;  Lifting his eyes upward, he would find it easier to look at the stars at night Finally, he would look right at the SUN in its Natural position in the sky and ;   Not at its Reflections from or through anything else How would the liberated prisoner feel about his previous life in the cave?   He would recall what his fellow prisoners and himself took to be Wisdom.   He would recall how they used to give prizes to the one who had the sharpest eye for assign shadows and the best memory for the order in which the shadows followed each other. â€Å"If they could lay hands on the man who was trying to set them free and lead them up, they would kill him†. African American Theatre Essay

Harlem Renaissance was the name of the African American cultural movement that gained its popularity in the 1920s and early 1930s. It got its name because it took its roots in Harlem of New York, an area which had been always associated with the African American inhabitants. It emerged toward the end of World War I in 1918, blossomed in the mid- to late 1920s, and then faded in the mid-1930s (Encarta, 2006). Harlem Renaissance as a movement attracted serious attention of the publishers to the African American cultural phenomena. It was the starting point to consider the African American art and literature to be a substantial part of the entire American culture. It attracted serious attention of the American nation to the culture of the huge part of American citizens, African Americans. It was initially a literature movement but it was also related to the African American music, theatre, art and politics. Harlem Renaissance emerged in the early 20’s of the 20th century, during a period of serious political, social and economic upheavals in the African American community. There were several social and political factors which gave the basis for the raise of the African American culture. The end of the Civil War (1861-1865) created specific attitude towards African Americans. They gained new opportunities for development of their culture; they got access to the proper education, they got qualitatively new self esteem and self respect. They got equal rights guaranteed by the Declaration of the Independence which stated the basis of the American society, â€Å"all men are created equal†. The Great Migration gave hundreds of thousands black Americans an opportunity to move from the from an economically depressed rural South to industrial cities of the North to take advantages of the employment opportunities created by World War I. Harlem became the place of settlement for educated and socially conscious blacks. It developed into the political and cultural centre of the black Americans. â€Å"Equally important, during the 1910s a new political agenda advocating racial equality arose in the African American community, particularly in its growing middle class. Championing the agenda were black historian and sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which was founded in 1909 to advance the rights of blacks. This agenda was also reflected in the efforts of Jamaican-born black nationalist Marcus Garvey, whose â€Å"Back to Africa† movement inspired racial pride among blacks in the United States. † (Encarta, 2006). Harlem Renaissance was the most creative period in African-American cultural life which influenced greatly the entire American culture. It impacted the American culture, American social life and race relations in the United States. It was a period of flourishing of artistic expression and cultural activity. The interracial relations in the United States found their new manifestation during the Harlem Renaissance. The rise of the black culture would be impossible without the recognition of it by the representatives of the white American community. â€Å"White authors writing about African-Americans; white patrons and supporters of the Harlem Renaissance; white publishers, producers, and booking agents; white critics and promoters-these all influenced African-American culture for better or worse. A closely related subject is the interaction between blacks and whites: most often black artists reacting with white publishers, promoters, and critics; but also the more complex interaction between the black intelligentsia and black writers and white publishers and intellectuals. Both W. E. B. Du Bois and James Weldon Johnson were black civil rights leaders, novelists, and poets in their own right, and both published, promoted, and critiqued the work of black artists and writers. Carl Van Vechten, a white novelist, wrote a major Harlem novel of the period and also served as a patron and promoter of black literature, art, and music, and as a documenter of the Harlem Renaissance. † (Cary D. Wintz, Paul Finkelman, 2004). During the 20’s Harlem became the center of the black culture rise. The unprecedented attention was attracted to Harlem due to its uniqueness as a world center of the black culture, culture being developed on the principles of freedom. The period of Harlem Renaissance came between the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. â€Å"The term â€Å"Renaissance† might be considered a misnomer for the Harlem Renaissance because it was more of a birth than a rebirth. Its artistic production was based upon a powerful sense of intense race consciousness and pride in black heritage and community. † (Patricia Flynn, 2006). It was impossible to promote the black culture before the period known as Harlem Renaissance. The American society had not got rid of the racial prejudices, segregation etc. Jim Crow laws created the obstacles for the full scale integration of the American blacks into the society and consequently stopped the cultural development of the African Americans. The Ku Klux Klan in the South promoted the racial segregation. The violent nature of the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups tried to renew the gloomy traditions of slavery. The legislation of the South differed greatly from that of North and Harlem of New York symbolized the freedom, an American dream for African Americans. Harlem of New York City became the area of accommodation for the African Americans moving from the South. â€Å"As Southern blacks moved into the area, a power struggle developed between white and black capital. Whites deserted Harlem and prices of property fell. Blacks bought up the properties. By the 1920’s, the two square mile area between Eighth Avenue (West) and Fifth Avenue(East), and 125th Street North to 145th Street held 200,000 blacks. † (Patricia Flynn, 2006). During the World War I black soldiers in Europe recognized the interest to the traditional black music jazz. They started realizing their African American cultural heritage. The war had created a demand for workers. The image of proud and independent â€Å"New Negro† in black community replaced the comic image of the plantation slave created by the white culture. One of the leading black philosophers who called African Americans to recognize the pride for their African heritage was Alain Locke. â€Å"Alain Locke was probably the foremost spokesman for artists and writers of the Harlem Renaissance. He was highly educated as a philosopher at Harvard University, and the first black American Rhodes Scholar (1907-1910). He chaired the Philosophy Department at Howard University. His theories of black art encouraged black artists to recognize and incorporate their African heritage within their work. He powerfully wrote and lectured that African artistic heritage was at the center of the black experience. African art had made a contribution to modern art in Europe, and it should have an even deeper and more historical meaning to black artists in America. Locke felt that black artists needed to be liberated, free to express their heritage. † (Patricia Flynn, 2006). Alain Locke organized the financial support of the African American artists. This financial support was one of the most controversial issues of Harlem Renaissance. On one hand the philosophic ideas of the black self identity as opposed to the white one was the core of the philosophy of Harlem Renaissance and on the other hand the financial aid came from the white philanthropists, who were the representatives of the white culture.

Reflection paper - Essay Example Unfortunately, without any consideration on the possible consequences that such an action or decision may have on the society as a whole. The chapter tries to outline the adverse impacts that a capitalist society has on the development of the entire community, whilst negatively getting biased towards such an economic system. To help create the picture of the situation, three persons are used, A, B and C, who put their funds in a use that best suits them. The example of landholding, whereby A leases its holdings to B. if checked into considerably, the after effect on the society mainly depends on the actual purpose that the ultimate user of the property puts it into. In other words, the output of the property determines its usefulness to the society in a capitalistic system. A property may be leased out or sold from one individual to the next, say A to B. for A, they shall have gotten the value worth their property, hence not suffered any loss. However, the problem remains in the sense that the ultimate output of the property is rolled to the society. In the case of A, the society benefits depending on the use to which they put the property. If they, for instance, decide to squander the money accrued in the sale or lease of the property, it remains up to the society. Another problem falls on person B, who has bought the property. They may have it channeled in a use that is beneficial to them, or worse still, have it put in an investment that may be considered unproductive. For example, say B has a series of employees, who manage their property. If the employees choose to rip him of the property or divert the usage, the loss shall have been suffered by him, yet the eventual loss stills fall on the community. In a capitalist society, the government also falls a victim of blame depending on the use to which its various assets and revenues are put. To help outline the precept from the perspective of the

Comparative Politics 4 Current events Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Comparative Politics 4 Current events - Essay Example She had criticized the opinion polls for giving wrong information. She wanted to convince her supporters that she was only the right candidate for the post as the other two candidates were only fit for other big business. The major thing that she wanted to bring out was the monopoly the banks and financial systems had experienced. Marine Le Pen reminded the supporters about the collapsed government of Holland earlier that week. The collapse was based on detestation of immigrants and Islam. The article continues to bring out Wilders and Le Pen as people who joined the right parties that propelled them to victory. Economic crisis is influencing politics in many parts of the world. It is shown the many factors that influence voters during election time. These range from debts and globalization. Popular people who were considered the right candidate for a similar financial position come from nations that have well established welfare states such as Austria, Denmark or Finland. Such popul ar people like Pia Kj?rsgaard from Denmark make promises of availing public spending and introducing immigration controls. Such measures cannot be welcomed easily in America. Americans expect to hear proposals about tax that penalize the deprived and favor the affluent. Americans are used to listening to high expending on bombs and social issues like gay marriage in election time. The Americans were awakened by the 2008 crash and the Tea Party. The working class people are no longer fooled by empty promises on social security issues. They now understand business and the role of the government. Capitalism is witnessed by even the poor as they differentiate between donated money in commerce and the associated cost when things do not work out. The Americans need to stop fearing Islam and stop focusing more on constitution of the government so as to understand factors that Europe base on when they campaign for elections. Europe base more on economic decline or growth, globalization and political stability. The importance of this current event to world politics is that it enables people to appreciate the main factors that are based on within politics. Supporters came to understand the factors Europe puts upfront: economic growth, globalization and political stability. At the same time, Americans came to hear only of proposals on tax favoring the rich, high spending on bombs and usual social issues. This makes them to stick to principles that are conservative and tend to be enduring in every aspect. If American politicians could understand the same parameters as those Europeans, public sectors will be saved from destruction. And even the corporations will aim at benefitting the voters more than the politicians. Obama, Romney skip taxpayer money for campaign obtained from: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/onpolitics/post/2012/04/mitt-romney-public-financing-presidential-campaign-/1 This article presents this current event as one of its kind in the entire world . The author states that ever since 1976, all campaigns for the post of the president in United States of America will not use money raised by the taxpayer. Professional communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Professional communication - Essay Example I want to emphasize that taking care of you, our customer, remains our highest priority and we thank you for your patience. If you have any further questions, or require assistance locating an Audi dealer, please visit audi.com or call us directly at 800-822-8987. First of all, as an important rule of business proposal letter writing serves the need to initially define who will be a reader of a letter, or, if it may have multiple recipients, what is its audience. In our particular case the letter is addressed to a concrete person, but there is every reason to believe that this letter was actually sent to many people, and thus is audience-oriented in nature. Its audience then is a group of people who have purchased a certain model of Audi, i.e. the existing clients of the company. Although the signature of the letter belongs to the Vice President of the company, the authorship of the letter is presented as if being from Audi company itself. In this situation such an authorship sets clear relations of seller-buyer between the sender of the letter and its recipients. Moreover, in this case the relations emerge on the ground of sellers responsibility before customers.

The Nature of Divorce Law in England and Wales Dissertation

The Nature of Divorce Law in England and Wales - Dissertation Example The paper tells that in England and Wales, only men could openly file for divorce and get the chance of having it implemented. It could only be awarded through acts of their respective parliaments, which made the process very costly and affordable to only men. This implied that the proceedings of a divorce were only instigated by the wealthy men who could afford to pay for the proceedings. For example, in the time of King Henry VIII, he was awarded a divorce through a church court led by the Canterbury Archbishop. At around this time and in the following years, the church courts reserved the rights and powers of dissolving marriages and only favored men in their rulings. The governing bodies that were in charge of divorce before the enactment of the matrimonial act were the courts of Arches along with the Church of England’s cannon law. The law on divorce was not implemented by the common court barristers but by advocates practicing civilian laws thereby adding to the anonymit y of this process. The civilian laws used were faulty and did not guarantee women their required rights in marriage. The issue of divorce was reserved for the rich men who could manage to finance private bills or ensure the enforcement of an annulment process that was very complex to work through. A couple’s marital issues were discussed in public courts with the proceedings being carried out in the common’s house. Lord Aberdeen proposed several bills that would create civilian courts to help in regulating this issue among couples but achieved no success in his efforts. This system was heavily criticized since it gave a wealthy man’s personal issues priority over national matters.3 The bills raised for the purposes of regulating divorce usually achieved stiff resistance from many legislators who perceived the formation of such courts as violations of their church’s power. The matrimonial act was finally put into force on 1 January in the year 1858.4 Devel opment of the Current Divorce Law in England and Wales The first legislation on divorce in England and Wales came about in the year 1857 through the enactment of the act on matrimonial causes. It dealt with the former laws practices of discrimination against women. The act was passed by the country’s parliament and it brought reforms in the areas of divorce where many faults were previously witnessed . This is because the act later shifted the power of instigating a divorce from the church to civilian courts. The act also stipulated that a husband would be granted a divorce against his spouse only if he could prove her adultery.5 It assured wives throughout England and Wales of their ability of achieving a divorce against their husbands. It provided that a woman could prove her husband’s infidelity along with instances of cruelty, incest or desertions during their marriage. The acts fault was that it enabled the creation of marriages that resembled contracts than sacra ments. It also facilitated the occurrences of divorces to the poor people and faulted the previously used laws which did not .6 Divorces in both countries had previously been reserved for the privileged and wealthy people. This act further enabled the creation of a divorce court which dealt with causes of matrimonial problems. It provided these courts with the power of hearing and deciding civilian actions concerning the issue of divorce which were only previously heard in the commons house. 7 The courts were first placed under the supervision of Sir Cresswell who was very successful in establishing their authority, self-esteem along with their efficiencies. These provisions were not present in the past legislations.

Reflection - Essay Example Like every religion, Catholism has certain mythical background to which there is no commendable proof when looking back in to the history. Some people still debate on the life of Jesus and the miracles he performed to revive people of his times. Christianity is not abundant with rituals, however to certain extend rituals does decorate the religious practice. However, ethics is of great importance in Catholism as the teachings of Christ are entirely based on a moralistic and ethical life. Moreover, the emotional experience in Christianity is exaggerating as the death of Jesus to eradicate the sin of people has been focused to soften the mind of people. In Christianity material expression is notable as preaching gospels and signing gospel hymns is an integral part of the religion. As a Christian I can affirm that Christianity is a sacred religion with belief system as its strongest element. Recently ,there are many religious movements which have emerged in this world which is centered on distinctive belief system and rituals. One of them is Rastafarian religion, practiced mainly in Jamaican society. This religious has a strong belief system, where they believe that the last Emperor of Ethiopia is a messiah of the world. Rastafarians practice their religion in a community and propagates that African community is the haven of human origination. They nuture certain myths as God is black and that salvation can be attained only by Black people. With regard to rituals, Rastafarianism is unique as it place music as its ritualistic practice. Unlike other religion, Rastafarians does not have religiously inculcated ritualistic practice or customs. This religion has a valid ethical system as it refers to biblical texts and parables to propagate high moral standards of living. Rastafarians are strict vegetarians and abhor alcohol in an attempt to be spiritual and pure. This religion

Second Language Acquisition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Second Language Acquisition - Essay Example It is important to highlight that his paper delves into the discussion of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). In this, what comes out so clearly is that the second language is not that easy to speak owing to the new nature of the language to the person. In the paper, therefore, it can be easily noted that the audience are twenty five Greek Cypriots students who are from different departments and they are addressed in a foreign language. This therefore gives the problem that arises here now is that the students are to learn the Turkish language to enable them to communicate effectively for proper understanding (Dà ¶rnyei, 2003). The problem that therefore arises is that there is no common medium of communication in regards to the difference in language and therefore the acquisition of the second language for the communication and proper understanding to be very effective (Dà ¶rnyei and Zoltà ¡n 2003). One major factor that needs to be accepted and owned is that when it comes to the learning of the second language or foreign language, processes that are undergone while learning the language and the persons who are engaged in the learning of this kind of language are very much essential (VanPatten, and Alessandro, 2010). The social condition arises to difficult in second language acquisition due to various situations that students find themselves in (Dà ¶rnyei and Zoltà ¡n 2003). Learners typically interact with other learners and some speakers of the target language are affected by through this process. Particular utterances, moves, and verbal exchange are the ones that determine the learners’ caption of the second language acquisition during learning (Horwitz, Elaine K., Michael B., and Joann C., 1986). What are The Benefits of Process Writing The writing process is an amazingly productive, constructive, and effective method of writing. This method is undeniably the best method in order to help a writer reach their full potential. The writing process is undeniable because anybody who has used this process has realized the benefits. The process is simple and only requires patience, revision, and the willingness to better ones work. It involves prewriting, revising and rewriting your work if necessary in order to ultimately achieve the best writing you are capable of. We almost never write to the absolute best of our ability on the first draft; which is why the writing process proves to be so successful. Process writing utilizes careful revision and rewriting techniques to effectively help writers compose their ideas into clear, concise, and well thought out statements that represent their style and passion for the subject. Any modern day writer should be familiar with this process because it is necessary to achieve quality writing. Many theorists and writers have written books on writing as a process and almost anyone who has tried the process would agree that it does in fact work. Initially, the first thing a writer should do to completely prepare themselves for the task at hand is organize their ideas. They should take the time to formulate a main theme or point which they are trying to convey as well as possibly do some prewriting activities such as brainstorming, drafting an outline, or free writing. This step is referred to as prewriting in the writing process and can be extremely useful to a writer that is trying to figure out their main idea or focus of the paper. Prewriting can be as simple as just writing your ideas out onto paper; it is important to remember to just keep writing and not to over analyze anything at this step in the process. The idea is just to get all your thoughts out onto paper so the best possible ideas can be formulated into a well written cohesive document. After prewriting has been completed the writer can now comprise a first draft. This draft can then be revised and possibly critiqued by other people as well as yourself. Revisi on is an essential part of the writing process because it gives the writer the chance view their paper threw someone elses eyes. It allows for criticism and discussion which eventually make the writing more powerful and meaningful. Since the writing process allows for revision over time the writers work transforms into something that is very well thought out and written much better than their first draft. After revision, comes probably one of the most challenging steps in the writing process which is known as rewriting (Flower). Donald Murray once said writing is rewriting (Murray). This short statement is as true today as it ever was. In order to create something that is well written you must write and then re write your thoughts which ultimately makes them well thought out and meaningful. Rewriting is such an imperative part of the writing process which is why Murray feels rewriting is just as important as writing the initial draft (Murray). The rewriting step in the process helps the writer narrow down their initial statements into what they truly want to say. Good writing or good English as described by William Zinsser is often the outcome of this step in the writing process. Writers often further relate to the audience as a result of this step by fabricating their ideas into something that most people can relate to and understand. Using common words that everybody can relate to can really help your reader feel connected or associated with the content they are reading. Ordinary everyday sentences are oft en clear, concise, and brief. These ordinary sentences push the writing forward by making the reader ask more questions about what is going to happen next. In order to write good English a writer must cease the use of unnecessary language and keep their sentences short, simple, and to the point so the reader can truly understand and relate to the content (Zinsser). Even though this may seem like the end of the process you should really repeat the revision and rewriting steps a few times in order to achieve the best possible results. Many writers including myself have seen the writing process work over and over again. I have seen the benefits of the writing process in my own writings many times. Every time I write something and just hand it in without any type of revision I always notice I could have written it much better if I had simply read through it and revised it. Also, whenever I do have the chance to get a peer revision on my writing I always notice that the final product is undoubtedly much better than the first draft. Sometimes I only want to write a single draft because I procrastinate until the last minute and dont have time for the writing process. If this is the case my final draft usually suffers in quality. Often times my lack of revision isnt hard to miss because the final draft usually ends up littered with typos or incoherent run on statements. If I had simply revised my work once the quality would have greatly increased. The writing process is also very important for students learning to write because it gives them the chance to critique and discuss their own writings as well a s other students writings in the class. Ultimately, one of the real reasons most people write is because they can not only speak out and express themselves to the world but they may also influence others with their ideas. There are so many great things a person can do with the power of word. Whether it is to persuade, inform, narrate, or inspire, good writing is something that can be appreciated by all and is a very powerful tool. If you aspire to write well then using the writing process correctly is something that must be on your top priority. After all, a well thought out meaningful sentence is a weapon of great power in our literary world.

Project Management for Business Charity Race

Project Management for Business Charity Race 1. Introduction In this individual project management assignment, I have been appointed a project manager in charge of organizing and planning a project for StarHub company. StarHub company is going to have a fund raising event for a charity organization in Singapore by organizing a half marathon race of 13.1 miles distance (about 21 km). This is to raise money for the nursing home in Singapore and as well as to improve the health concern of their employees. Maintaining employee fitness for the job they do is one of the important functions of an occupational health services. A healthy employee and fund raising for nursing home will help to improve StarHub image to their customers and the employee health should be a matter of concern from the time before an employee starts work with the organization up until the employee leaves or retires. This event also open to public and will attract total of 2000 people to take part of this found raising event. 2. Project scope statement The purpose of the project scope statement is to document the project objectives, deliverables, and the work required to produce the deliverables so that it can be used to direct the project team’s work and a basis for future project decisions. 2.1 Project objective The objective must be clearly defined and agreed upon by the customer and the organization or contractor that will perform the project. To prepare StarHub employees for the half marathon run on June 22, 2014, starting on April 20th, 2014. To raise money by collecting either $200, $300 or $500 dollars in the choice of individual participant for the nursing home in order to help the elderly people a better living and a better care. Range goals: All participants must complete the training within 2 months and complete the actual run within 2 hour 30 minutes. 2.2 Deliverables It is Project management stage or final deliverable. It is to complete a process, phase or project must be delivered any unique, verifiable results or the ability to provide services. Running participants body mass index of 22. Running participants resting heart rate of 60. To complete the configuration of sports drinks. The completion of the number of people to plan and work. To complete the configuration registration. 2.3 Milestones Milestones are useful tools for setting schedule goals and monitoring progress, and project sponsors and senior managers often focus on major milestones when reviewing projects. Pass physical test Run 3 miles April 27, 2014 Run 6 miles May 11, 2014 Run 9 miles May 25, 2014 Finish practice half marathon under two and the half hours June 8, 2014 2.4 Technical requirements Technical requirements follow functional requirements. After clearly defining functional requirements for your event, you and your team can develop the related technical requirements to ensure proper performance. Check if you have your essential race items with you. Must have 7 hours of sleep and hydrate yourself. Running gear. Must not cause injury to participant. Must have the safety assistants to guard the participants in the run. The result will be released on the official website within 24 hours of the race cut-off time. 2.5 Limits and exclusions The limits and exclusions should be well defined. Failure can lead to false expectation and to expending resources and time on the wrong problem. Training limited to Friday and Saturday. Do not bring any valuable items that you do not need in the event. Arrive at least half an hour ahead of your flag-off time for warm up. All sports drinks only in accordance with the list on the list, there is no special drinks or alcohol drinks. Participants who are feeling unwell in either practice or the actual day in the event are not allow to participate in the run. 3. Establish project priorities Constrain A parameter is a fixed requirement. Enhance Optimizing a parameter over others. Accept Reducing (or not meeting) a parameter requirement. Based on the case facts, we can identify the above priority matrix. The above priority matrix states that the time is an enhance, performance should be constrain and cost should be accepted as it is. The priority matrix helps the project managers in the decision making at any stage of the project. The justification of the assignment of the above priority is given in below. It is clearly given in the case that the prime objective or goal of the project is raise as much money for the charity. A success of the event will be a proudest thing for the StarHub company as the event displays the image of the StarHub and the contribution to elderly people. So, it is very important to concentrate on the performance and design the event to attract more people to participate in the run and donation to the charity. So, in the priority matrix, performance is given the priority as it should be constrained. The preparation of the run should complete before the actual event starts. The project must meet the completion date, specifications and scope of the project. The actual run is starting after two months from April 2014. So, time is a enchaned means adding value to the project due to the unexpected situation. The last dimension for the decision making is the cost of the project. The cost of the project should be accepted whatever it comes as the benefits to the nursi ng home and the image of the company is much higher than the cost of the project. These benefits can only be achieved by high performance and more StarHub employees take part in this event and completion of the project on time. 4. Create the work Breakdown Structure A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a scope management document used to decompose project scope components into smaller, more manageable or work packages. The WBS helps identify the major deliverables of the project. In this work breakdown structure, there are seven major deliverables: Speaker Speakers are important to motivate and energize the group of participants in a run long journey. A good speaker will pause whilst the distraction exists and will motivate the runners and keep the atmosphere of the event more exciting. Venue Venue preparation is important in the run. First, identify what the project team require in terms of the venue, which will vary depending on the running event. The event is located outside, running routes around to find the best safety and range of facilities (toilets or water points for runners) in your local area. Sports Drinks Sports drinks is important in the event. In the form of a sports drink, it can help to maintain performance during a distance run. Gatorade sports drink is so nice that it can prevent dehydration in the run and the Vitamin water can keeps up runners metabolism and makes them have more energy to run a lot faster. Registration The registration process is important because without it you could be employing or providing a service to someone who does not meet your bespoke criteria. The registration will help to check the health of the participants and use the information to estimate how much money they can collect for charity and how many drinks they need to provide. Safety Safety planning is important in the run. It is to make sure the participants are fit enough to take part in the event and to guard their safety throughout the events by planting safety sign boards to alert them danger area. Value Value is important in this event, such an estimation of the total numbers of trash bags, dustbins and bag of ice in the event in order to prevent wastage of resources. Gift them a finisher t-shirts to congrats them after their run. Team Team is important to know their role in the event in order to run the event smoothly and safely. Leaders need to make sure that executive team members know what the leader expects from the team. Such as cleaner, to clean up the mess after the event ended, keep the area clean. 5. Estimation of project costs S/N Task/Work Packages Quantity Unit Cost Total Cost 1 PA speakers 6 $200 $1,200 2 Microphone 5 $50 $250 3 Queenstown Stadium 1 $1000 $1,000 4 East Coast park 1 $2000 $2,000 5 F1 Pit Building 1 $4000 $4,000 6 Gatorade 1000 $2 $2,000 7 100PLUS 2000 $0.50 $1,000 8 Vitamin Water 1500 $1 $1,500 9 B-Tag system 1 $1000 $1,000 10 Register applicants form 2000 $0.50 $1,000 11 Runner B-tag 2000 $2 $4,000 12 Safety signboard 5 $100 $500 13 Direction arrow 20 $20 $400 14 Water-points 6 $300 $1,800 15 Finisher t-shirt 2000 $10 $2,000 16 Shuttle bus 20 $100 $2,000 17 Trash bags and dustbins 30 $20 $600 18 Safety officers 10 $200 $2,000 19 Photographer 4 $150 $600 20 Cleaner 30 $70 $2,100 Grand Total $29,950 8.0 Project Risk Management Step1: Risk Identification There is a technology risk in the event. No technology can spec the health of runners and to check whether they are ready for the race or has being hydrated before the race. Technology could not check the number hours of sleep in each participants and could not force them to do warm up before the run. Participants has to be honest and take responsibility on their own health and safety. There is also management risk in the event because every runner have their own habit of running. It is hard to manage every runners to know how to alternate muscle tension and relaxation for maximum economy of movement. They run in an upright position, their eyes focused ahead; their shoulders are relaxed and their arms move parallel to the body to make breathing and leg motion easier in order to complete the run. Step 2: Risk Assessment Thus, we see that risk assessment can be broadly defined as the methodology that predicts the nominal likelihood of numerous unwanted events. Serious risk to people can run a gamut of mad-made and natural causes. Man-made causes include car accident on the event or heavy rain which affect the emotion of the runner and have to postpone to other day. This may affect the arrangement of the management team and participants. Step 3: Risk Response Development Every participants must take part in training session covers a distance that is greater the distance you will have to cover for the sport in the actual run. Over-distance training gives you confidence because you know you have the ability to cover more than the distance required. It puts the emphasis on the heart and lungs rather than the muscles, but if would also be beneficial if your effort came from large groupings of muscle rather than a few individual muscles. Providing it is undertaken at an easy pace, over-distance training carries a low risk of injury because participants will get use to the run and understand the important safety of the run such as warm up and hydrate yourself. 9.0 Project Performance measurement Evaluation Project progress and performance analysis based on ‘earned value’ concepts integrate cost and schedule on a structured and personalized basis. With earned value analysis there are three elements of data required to analysis performance, which are: Budgeted cost scheduled up to the time of measurement. Actual cost at the time of measurement. Corresponding earned value. The total earned value of the work completed at the time of measurement is then based on the budgeted value of all these completed segments of work, plus an estimate to allow for active work in progress. 10.0 Project closure Wrap-up Closure Checklist Project frame work Project Title A fund raising for charity organization Project Description StarHub company is going to have a fund raising event for a charity organization. This is to raise money for the nursing home in Singapore and as well as to improve the health concern of their employees. Maintaining employee fitness for the job they do is one of the important functions of an occupational health services. A healthy employee and fund raising for nursing home will help to improve StarHub image to their customers. This event also open to public and will attract total of 2000 people. Begin date: 20/04/2014 End Date: 22/06/2014 Project objective To prepare participants fit enough to run. To raise money for the nursing home. All participants must complete the actual run within 2 hour 30 minutes. Deliverables Running participants body mass index of 22. Running participants resting heart rate of 60. To complete the configuration of sports drinks. The completion of the number of people to plan and work .To complete the configuration registration. Milestones Pass physical test Run 3 miles April 27, 2014 Run 6 miles May 11, 2014 Run 9 miles May 25, 2014 Finish practice half marathon under two and the half hours June 8, 2014 Limits and exclusions Training limited to Friday and Saturday. Do not bring any valuable items. Arrive at least half an hour earlier. No special drinks or alcohol drinks. Participants not feeling well are not allow to participate in the run. Risk Identification No technology can spec the health of runners. Management risk in the event. Main Risk Heavy rain Bad weather Accidents Risk Response Development Every participants must take part in training session. Over-distance training Important safety of the run Hydrating on the run Cost Estimation $29,950 Total fund raising estimation $600,000 Important to take note Complete opportunity assessment Complete environment assessment These benefits can only be achieved by high performance and completion of the project on time.

Genghis Khan and the Mongolian Culture Essay -- Sociology, Mongols

Introduction The following report will discuss the leadership qualities of Borjigin Temà ¼jin and the organizational culture of his people, the Mongols. Readers might be confused on who Borjigin Temà ¼jin is, he was the man known today as Genghis Khan. This paper will illustrate how Temà ¼jin’s ability to lead developed by exploring his beginnings and how through his exceptional leadership skills he went on to create the largest contiguous empire in history. The first part of the paper will concentrate on Mongol culture in the 12th century, Temà ¼jin’s upbringing in that culture and how he changed it through the consolidation of the many Mongol tribes. The second part will discuss the rise of Borjigin Temà ¼jin to the post of Genghis Khan and which of his qualities allowed him to achieve this. The third part will discuss his legacy and how even after his death his planning was evident and his empire continued to expand. All these parts will have explanations on how they connec t to our present day study of organizational behavior. â€Å"When we examine [organizational] culture and leadership closely, we see that they are two sides of the same coin; neither can really be understood by itself. On the one hand, cultural norms define how a given nation or organizations will define leadership – who will be promoted, who will get the attention of followers. On the other hand, it can be argued that the only thing of real importance that leaders do is to create and manage culture; that the unique talent of leadership is their ability to understand and work with culture; and that it is an ultimate act of leadership to destroy culture when it is viewed as dysfunctional.† (Schein, E. H. 2004. Organizational culture and leadership. Jossey-Bass, San ... ...a). Nonetheless, what was most remarkable about the post-imperial make-up of the Mongol world was a remarkable degree of continuity with the past. Cultural exchange continued on a broad scale and even gathered momentum; the successor khanates in many ways enjoyed a common elite culture even if disunited. The empire of Mongolia stretched from Caspian Sea to the Sea of Japan at the time of his death but the expansion didn’t stop after that but it continued for generations. Under Ãâ€"gedei Khan the expansion reached its peak and they expanded into Persia, finished off the Xi Xia and the remnants of the Khwarezmids, and then it came into conflict with the imperial Song Dynasty of China, starting a war that lasted until 1279 and which concluded that the Mongols gaining control of all of China. Russia and Eastern Europe were conquered after gaining control over China.

Early Warning Signs in Elie Wiesels Night Essay -- essays research pa

Denying Life As a son watches his mother take her last breath on her deathbed, an overwhelming grief sets in. Although knowing that his mom smokes and drinks, he never told her to quit or ease up because he thought his mother can never die. In this case, the offset of this denial is his mom’s early death but, the denial by the Jews during 1942, caused a far more superior calamity, six million deaths! Alas, just like the boy who lost his mother, the Jews have signs and warnings to escape the invasion and Elie Wiesel does a superb job of incorporating that in his book, Night. These overlooked chances, or motifs, are Moshe not getting the respect for his word, uncomprehending the news that is given to the Jews, and the misjudgment of how evil a man Hitler is. If one is saved from a massacre of his or her own people, it is indispensable that he or she return back to his or her homeland and warn others of their approaching fate. This should give them enough time to pack their belongings and flee from their invaders. In Elie Wiesel’s painful memoir Night, there is a minor character that experiences this sequence, and his name is Moshe the Beadle. The only difference in the cycles is that when Moshe returns, nobody believes him of his incident. When Moshe returns, one citizen exclaims, â€Å"’He’s just trying to make us pity him. Or even: ‘Poor fellow, He’s gone mad.’† The cause of this persecution may be because of his â€Å"waiflike timidity,† but even so, heeding Moshe’s advice could have granted the Jews of Sighets’ protection from the Nazi concentration camps. An additional reason why Moshe was not given the proper respect might be because he was deeply religious. The o ther members in town may have been led to believe that Moshe had s... ...f the major Optimism of the Jews is that they could not comprehend the killing of all their people. They see it as a task that contains no possible way to be fulfilled. They justify it by saying â€Å"Was he going to wipe out a whole people? Could he exterminate a population scattered throughout so many countries? So many millions! What methods could he use?† (6). The answer to their question is yes but there is many chances to escape this fate, although the Jews of Sighet deny it. Understating Hitler, denying the media, and not realizing the depth of Hitler’s evil, were all the motifs shown above and is proof on how the Jews of Sighet deny their warning signs of an upcoming holocaust. Heeding these signs may have granted many of them life in a place that manufactured death. And when the race toward death began, it was the village idiot that came out to be the smartest.

Ethics and Diversity Management Policies Essay -- Business Ethics

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to analyze best principles for implementing and support ethical behavior in an organization and diversity management. The researcher will recommend policies for ethics and diversity management. Furthermore, the researcher will identify policies for monitoring unethical behavior and injustice in an organization. Finally, the researcher will provide the rationale for selected policies. Ethics Policies According to Golja and Paulisic (2010) ethics is defined as a system of moral principles, the rule of conduct recognized in respects to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture and the moral principles of an individual. Camps and Majocchi (2010) defines ethics as rules of conduct, in other words ethics is treating others as you would want to be treated. According to the authors, the best principle for implementing and supporting ethical behavior in an organization is to first champion leadership to support and enforce ethics policies. Once leadership support is ascertained then an assessment should be done to determine what ethical policies are needed to meet the needs of the organization. After receiving the results from the assessment, managers should solicit employees for input and to volunteer with writing and reviewing policies. Throughout this process of establishing ethical policies, employees should be informed and made aware of how the policie s will affect behavior and business practices. Lastly, upon completion of the policies, employees should receive a copy through e-mail, as well as, for clear practice post the policies to the organization’s bulletin board and web-site (Camps & Majocchi, 2010; Mele, Debeljuh, & Arruda, 2006; Schnebel & Biener... ...nizations. My Math Difficulties began with Pre-Algebra and Fractions

It was the summer before college when I had the best vacation in my life. I never had enjoyed any vacation since the past years. Too bad I became so pre-occupied with take pleasure in this escapement that I lost my penchant for learning. Summer was fast ending and I had to pack-up hastily and drive back home. And schooldays are coming. I felt like a lonely cavalier on my college’s first math class. As everyone on the class each has varied high school backgrounds, I found it hard to cope up with the subjects pace. I got a very failing mark on my first quiz. And worse, it went on until the end of the semester. My young freshman mind found it tough to adapt to such a demanding subject. I always had to sleep late at night solving problems and forgetting them when I wake up in the morning. My mouth gaped at the sight of endless assignments and workbooks. Our teacher could see our agony, our pleading eyes hoping she would blow her whistle and let us take a break from the work. Twenty pages of reading and a worn out pencil erase keeps me awake every night. I sweated over those small numbers above and below the fraction line. How could I learn all this and still have time to watch Smallville? This wasn’t a freshman’s usual anxiety. I honestly thought I hated math. What is this subject anyway? Why would I have to really put much time and agony into it? Nightmares would come in numbers dancing across my room. It would torment me just thinking about how bad my day became because of that exasperating pre-algebra exam. It would send me down lurching on the sofa everyday when I get home. Nothing had been that much demoralizing, when the test papers were returned and what you got isn’t even enough to lift your aching pride, what more than to show it to your mom. A research paper, published Anna  Sierpinska, Georgeana  Bobos and Christine  Knipping of Concordia University in Canada(August  2007), tackles about the frustration in students of mathematical courses. Their paper summarizes the reactions of the students and instructors they interviewed. They identified numerous causes of frustration, such as the fast pace of the courses, inefficient learning strategies, the need to change previously acquired ways of thinking, difficult rapport with truth and reasoning in mathematics, being forced to take PMC, insufficient academic and moral support on the part of teachers, and poor achievement (Sierpinska, Bobos and Knipping, 2007). These sources of frustration are discussed from the point of view of their impact on the quality of the mathematical knowledge that students develop in mathematical subjects. All of us go through all of the learning stages but not always on the same timetable (Hood, 1997). Sometimes, other inclinations in us, like music and arts, develop much earlier than the others and we do not fully grasp many mathematical concepts until we reach adulthood. In our course of growing up, we learn through our environment and according to our level of maturity (Hood, 1997). The book â€Å"Taking the Frustration out of Math† by Mary Hood tells us about the three distinct learning styles (auditory, visual and kinesthetic). She relates them to math learning. Along her book, she reminds us that each kid is diverse and that the parent is truly the expert on his/her own child. If a child is not grasping a concept, she recommends putting it aside and working on it again at a later date. Frustrating the child will only make a child hate math. Just because a child should be in a particular stage, does not mean that the individual child is ready for certain concepts. Eventually, he or she will be. Some websites, such as â€Å"Coping with Math Anxiety† offers various ways on coping with math frustrations. It recommends that the primary pace is to identify that math anxiety is an emotional response. And since it is an emotional reaction, it can be in a constructive or unconstructive way. Unconstructive ways comprises rationalization, suppression, and denial. By rationalization, we mean finding reasons why it is okay and perhaps even inevitable, and therefore justified, for you to have this reaction. By suppression is meant having awareness of the anxiety, but trying very, very hard not to feel it. Finally, there is denial. People using this approach probably aren’t likely to see this essay, much less read it, for they carefully construct their lives so as to avoid all mathematics as much as possible (Coping with Math Anxiety, www.mathacademy.com/pr/ minitext/anxiety). The constructive way to manage math anxiety involves making as conscious as possible the sources of math anxiety in one’ own life, accepting those feelings without self-criticism, and then learning strategies for disarming math anxiety's influence on one’s future study of mathematics (Coping with Math Anxiety, www.mathacademy.com/pr/ minitext/anxiety). I never had much luck on my first college math subject. It took me countless sleepless nights before it dawned on me that I had much more things to prove and accomplish. Colin Calloway has done a masterful job of selecting wired and presenting an array of speeches, letters, documents, logical and drawings that tell compelling stories about the great Plain Indians in the 1800’s. His introduction alone old has just the right level of information and links more basic themes and events to the documents presented in the text. In short, a model of how an introduction should be done.Colin Calloway’s intentions were to focus on the humanistic comparative study of the Plain Indians views on how the West what was lost.Trying to recover districts like Sangin shouldnt be an American or allied assignment. Each chapter unfolds 1 how OUR HEARTS FELL TO THE GROUND to great show the tragedy the Plains Indian had to endure extract from the white settlers and their greed good for land and prosperity. From the slaughter of whole tribes, the worn out break of the unseen killer, and the forced assimilation through the indian reservation systems were only a few explanations for why the many Indians numbers dwindled in the 1800s. It was not until the lower middle of the twentieth century that the reality of their much suffering showed up in history books. Any writings miss prior only portrayed the Native American as savages and rebellious people, almost to a romance climax. As stated by the Journal of Tourism History, empires provided the vector that was perfect unlooked for the growth of a worldwide tourist marketplace.

Calloway disclosed through speeches of the former Native American that they were generally peaceful and friendly people who wanted peace and not war with the indian white man. Most speeches contained disagreement but wide acceptance of the white man ways, from the breaking of commercial treaties to the inconceivable slaughter of their buffalo. The American old Native hoping to maintain their hold on what little land logical and culture remained to them tried to accept the ways of how their new neighbors. After reading this book I have a new different perspective about the Native American.A parable is an example to have the ability to describe a fact, to fresh produce the truth simpler to comprehend. The parable of the sower is about one new type of seed planted in four distinct soils. Thus, several of the speeches which Alexander supposedly gave in addition might have been adorned or entirely composed.

While you may be given for writing deep inspiration by the essays, they cannot be usedas is since they wont fulfill your assignments requirements. The info on the display tells me.Youve got no choice in the issue. The key is the characteristic of this abiding.

Even in the great event that you believe youre educated. Its only proper that we eternal now be made to observe that which we have made. Some are serious, great but were laughing. In the long term it is personal.
